About

Dr Coskun Tarkocin, CFA, FRM

Where I started

I trained as an industrial engineer before I studied economics, and I still look at a bank the way an engineer looks at a system: what goes in, what comes out, and what breaks first under strain.

Inside the bank

I started in risk management in 2006 and worked my way across the balance sheet to Group Treasury, which I joined in 2020. Since 2022 I have worked at director level in the Global Liquidity team, playing a lead part in three of the Group's strategic Treasury programmes. Each move showed me the same decisions from a different side, and taught me that most hard problems in a bank sit where those sides meet.

Asking why

Practice kept raising questions I wanted to answer properly, so I went back to research: a PhD in Economics built on machine learning papers, then two years as a Visiting Research Fellow at King's Business School.

Teaching what I practise

Teaching grew alongside the work, from liquidity training for Europe's banking supervisors to thousands of bankers inside the bank. I keep coming back to the same lesson: teaching is the best form of learning.

What drives me

Better-managed banks serve the economy and society better; that conviction is behind my research and my teaching. My other passion is technology, and learning by doing is my thing, so lately I have been experimenting with new technologies.

Outside work

Away from the balance sheet I am usually on a tennis court, where I am also Treasurer of my lawn tennis club in London, or on the water sailing and windsurfing. In winter it is skiing, and I also enjoy horse riding. I also care about widening access to education, including for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.
